Reverse Engineering of a PCB

In today’s rapidly evolving business landscape, product sustainability has become a core business strategy. Maintaining an active product requires access to design files, test plans, assembly processes, and other critical documentation. Among these, design files are especially crucial.   • Understanding reverse engineering: We began by exploring the concept of reverse engineering, highlighting its significance in product sustainability. 
  • Advantages of reverse engineering: We discussed the critical advantages, emphasizing how it plays a pivotal role in the product design lifecycle. 
  • Role of PCB reverse engineering in product design: We identified how PCB reverse engineering contributes to sustaining active products, particularly in recreating CAD design files (schematics and PCB layouts) from available CAD output files. 
  • Demo of PCB Layout Reverse Engineering: In the webinar, we demonstrated two common situations that engineers might face during PCB layout reverse engineering:  
    Scenario 1: When the schematic PDF, BOM (Bill of Materials), Gerber files, and PCB ASCII file are available. This scenario allows for a more straightforward reverse engineering process, as all essential files are accessible for recreating the PCB design.   
    Scenario 2:  When the schematic PDF, BOM, and Gerber files are available, but the PCB ASCII file is missing. This scenario requires additional steps and the use of advanced software tools to accurately recreate the PCB layout, compensating for the missing PCB ASCII file.
